What is the point of Om? In simple singularity which quickly turns into exquisite, shared harmony; Om symbolizes unity, an invitation to join in, and that there is never a need for perfection, or how one needs to begin. It is not necessary to be in tune. There is no specific length to it, or even when another voice enters or exits with breath. It requires participation, and as we hold together, our singular notes become one.
Singing Om often, I recognize it everywhere, and recently it was in nature.
As I was feeling the breeze, watching the wildlife surrounding, overhead, I heard a familiar sound, Om, emerging from the wings of mallards overhead. It instantly connected me back to the circle of women I share a vocal Om with often, and how wonder filled it is when we hear, see, and feel these songs in nature and wildlife alike. A gift from the origin, our loving Creator who pours out these every day divine gifts unending.
Here is my poem, Mallard Om.
Mallard Om
I heard a returning song
One I had not held
In my recent Memory
Bank of clouded tasks
I heard, then felt
Like ribbons through wind
They rubbed together into a hum
Humming, om
Om, they announced!
Two, by one, by three
Mallards overhead landed
On the pond with a subtle gliding slosh
How wonderful
To hear their Om
From their wings, to my longing ears
